Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Quartierrätsel.

General

What is Quartierrätsel?
Quartierrätsel are outdoor puzzle tours for families in Zurich neighbourhoods. You solve exciting puzzles on your smartphone, follow a GPS map from station to station, and discover your neighbourhood in a whole new way.
What age group is it for?
Our tours are designed for children aged 6 to 10. All puzzles can be solved without school knowledge and are intuitive. Younger siblings can join in, and older kids love to help too.
How long does a tour take?
Between 60 and 90 minutes depending on the tour — including leisurely walking and play breaks. There's no time pressure, so you can take as long as you like.
Do I need to download an app?
No! Quartierrätsel works directly in your smartphone browser. No download needed, no storage space required. Just open quartierraetsel.ch, enter your code and go.

Tours & Puzzles

What types of puzzles are there?
Over 15 different types! Including: counting things on-site, taking photos, sorting letters, identifying shadows, compass directions, pantomime challenges and much more.
What if we get stuck on a puzzle?
No problem! Every puzzle has hints you can reveal. In the worst case, the solution is shown. No child ever gets stuck. Hints only cost a few points — the fun continues.
Is there a scoring system?
Yes! You earn points for each solved puzzle (max 3 per station). Hints cost a few points. At the end you see your total score. But don't worry — there's no time pressure and no penalty.
What is the solution word?
At each station you collect a letter. At the end of the tour, you put all letters together to form a solution word — which reveals the answer to the story!
Are the tours stroller-friendly?
Yes, most of our tours are accessible and stroller-friendly. 4 of 6 tours have wide paths with ramps or elevators where needed. The Altstadt and Höngg tours have stairs or steep paths.
Can we do the tour in the rain?
In principle yes — the app works in the rain. But the tours are much more fun in dry weather, especially for the kids. We recommend choosing a nice day.
How does it work with 2 kids?
Choose "2 children" in the setup and enter both names. Per station, one kid gets the easy puzzle, the other the harder one — both play in turn on the same device. No one gets bored, no one gets overwhelmed.
We're coming with 3+ kids. Is that possible?
Yes! Choose "3+ children" in the setup. You don't need to enter any names — per station, the easy puzzle comes first, then the harder one. Perfect for school classes, birthday groups or bigger families. With the Birthday Edition, only the birthday child's name appears in the story.
What if both our kids are the same age?
If both kids are about the same age and want to solve the same puzzles, we recommend the "1 child" mode with taking turns. So both work on the same puzzles and can solve them together.

Code & Payment

How much does a tour cost?
CHF 29 per tour for a group of up to 6 people. No per-person pricing — whether 2 or 6 people join. The code is reusable up to 3 times.
How do I get an access code?
Choose a tour on our website, pay by credit card or Twint, and instantly receive your personal access code. Enter it in the app and the tour begins.
Can I reuse the code?
Yes! Each code is valid up to 3 times. Perfect if you want to repeat the tour, or if friends or relatives want to try it too.
How long is the code valid?
Your code is valid for 1 year from the purchase date. You don't have to do the tour immediately — just wait for nice weather.

Technical

What do I need for the tour?
A smartphone with internet connection and GPS — that's all! Works with iPhone and Android. Best to fully charge your battery beforehand.
Does it work offline?
The puzzle content is downloaded when you start the tour. After that, you only need GPS — even with weak signal. An internet connection helps for the map but isn't strictly required.
What if GPS doesn't work?
No problem! Every station has an "I'm here!" button. You can play the entire tour without GPS — the descriptions help you find each station.
